Efficiency comes from both time and energy. If in one round, X throws 100, Y throws 50, and both land at 50%, X wins the round cause (s)he lands more punches.

This scoring idea came from watching a fight where a Russian guy threw like 1000 punches total, in 12 rounds. The other guy threw around 400, yet they landed almost exactly the same amount - 200. It seemed like a ridiculous waste of energy, but the Russian guy won decisively.
