The end goal of evolution is to spread life to wherever it can survive. If that means creating an apeman with the ability to engineer organisms to survive on other worlds or in space, so be it.

Doesn't seem to say, having checked the link. But- assuming it's no photosynthesis, there are other basic chemical compounds which microbes could turn into metabolic energy, hydrogensulfide for instance.
