Kind of like the Romans with the gladiators and all the rest of the fun stuff they did in those big arenas.
People want to be entertained, amused, lulled into believing, that everything's alright, even if it isn't.
Everything is geared toward consuming. You gotta buy stuff you don't need, with money you don't have.
And now and then, you say "praise god/jesus/whatever", just to be on the safe side.
