Fossil fuel has no future as a fuel, and maybe none at all otherwise. As green energy technologies advance they'll become even more profitable than they are already, and anyone clinging to fossil originated oil or coal will find themselves as rapidly out classed as companies still selling buggy whips at the end of the 19th century [thank Danny Devito in Other People's Money for that analogy].
That's just how it's gonna be. And Rex Tillerson is a complete fucking retard if he doesn't get it. Sure, he's making money hand over fist now, but given a two decades or less he'll realize what a ruinous end he's led Exxon- possibly right into bankrupcy with their drilling platform and other hardware assets sold as scrap.
Already there are numerous efforts to get solar cells to convert a wider range of solar EM emissions into electrcity [at present solar voltaic cells only convert a narrow range of infrared]. There are currently known a crystalization process which can capture the entire visible spectrum, and yet this is still nowhere near the full potential of solar energy nor anywhere close. Imagine harnessing all the UV, microwave and X-ray bands from the sun reaching the surface of the Earth. Each one of these bandwidths are far higher energy level frequencies than the visible range by many magnitudes.
And that's not considering wind, tidal, nuclear, biomass et al. We may even one day see a time when formerly designated nuclear "waste" be used until the last rad has been squeezed out and the remains becoming radiologically innert. Living organisms are their own power houses, and the right genetic engineering can turn bacteria into direct sources of electricity but also generators of hydrogen gas having, in the process, metabolized what we'd deem raw and harmful garbage. Killing three birds in one fel shot.
Rex Tillerson- T. Rex, is as much a dinosaur as his product and birthname imply.

maybe...and I hope you're right...
I really only posted this as an FYI...not to advocate a position or defend Exxon.
Just out of curiosity though...did you read the part about fossil fuels being dominant into the 21st century?
