why should i tip?
ok this really pisses me off. couple weeks ago, we went to Tony Roma's. probably wont go again, at least not to that particular location.
the hostess took forever to seat us in an empty restaurant.
the steak i got was 5 ounces of fat and 5 of actual meat.
the waitress refilled our drinks after we asked twice. its not like she was busy, there were 4 other tables with customers, that's it.
the food order was wrong and took forever to fix.
then they expect a tip. why? my experience was horrible, why should they be rewarded? thats just stupid.
i have heard the argument that servers get below minimum wage in the states, because its expected their tips will make up the difference. that is fucked up. they should be paid the minimum because its the law
but up here, there is no such law. everyone gets at least $8.40 per hour. why should i supplement their income? if the service was incredible, i would be happy to tip. but it seems it has become a custom to tip and this is not a good thing. if customers always tip, there is no incentive for the server to do a good job. it should be a bonus for them going above and beyond. i can count on one hand the number of times i have had such service in a restaurant.
what i hate even more is those damn cups by the cash register of coffee shops and fast food places. at the university here, there is one coffee shop with a tip cup labelled "support counter-intelligence." i dont really know what that means. am i helping them pay for school or taking away their motivation to go to school?
there is another place that serves stir-fry called "Edo." 90% of the time when i go there, the guy at the counter is sleeping (im not kidding). he takes my order, yells it to the guy at the grill and for that he thinks he deserves my change? what the hell?
cab drivers really piss me off too. i know it is a tough job and they dont get paid much with the price of gas and having to pay their company to use the car. life's rough. if a driver smiles and cheerfully puts my wheelchair in the trunk, in -30 weather, i am more than willing to give him a fat tip. but, as happened on monday, if he asks for my address twice and still takes me to the wrong place, why the fuck should he be entitled to a tip? a friend of mine from Korea said after being here for a couple years, he went back home for the summer. when he took a cab, he offered a tip to the driver, who actually go upset and said he didnt need charity. right on. thats how it should be.
some people say if you dont tip in a restaurant, you may get "something extra" in your food the next time you go there. isnt that extortion? and isnt it illegal?
