What If...? [theological implications of cosmic collisions]
Seeing an ad on the Sci Fi channel about a really crappy remake of the movie Asteroid had me thinking.
According to Judaism and Christianity alike Jerusalem is the "chosen city" and the people of Israel the "chosen people" to be protected by god's power.
And yet...
What if a meteor did strike in Israel- in Jerusalem possibly, kill hundreds of thousands or even tens of millions of people [Israeli, Palestinian and people in surrounding countries] simply because of random chance they being there when the planet and the object just happen to cross paths and turn just so when the hit occurs?
What are we to make of such a hit? Would this imply that divine protection simply proved false? How would Christians, Jews and members of ever other religion cope with it? And would this force a change in our thinking over these two religions even if both theologies continued on after the paradigm challenging smash?
This isn't a slam on Christianity or Judaism, I'm really curious what board members of either religion have to say.
