I think that economic reasons (lucrative Iraq contracts), French superiority complexes (increased French hostility toward U.S. over the years), as well as the past you mentioned combined to make their policy.

I am positng about their warfare EXPERIENCE and in no way shape of form agreeing with policy of nazi collaborators or any Colonialism.

Americans occupied and colonized the Philappines so not many here can flatly condemn colonialism since it is a part of American history, too.
