Chechen, 61, will begin his journey back to Iraq this morning. He will stay for a month, documenting civilians' lives and visiting family and friends. He wants to see first hand the condition of his homeland.
He last visited in 2003. Since then, seven of his family members have died. Some succumbed to illnesses; others felled by gun fire and street bombs. This time he feels he's returning as an American.
His 83-year-old mother, Nadira Ahmad, died of a stroke last month. Chechen says she was denied hospital care and died at her home a few days later.
