So, more money for China is good because if the country fuels it's economy a smidge by hosting a global sporting event the people will revolt against it's ills?

Couldn't this have been accomplished by saying NO to China and dismissing it's entry as a potential host with laughter and a "Nice try, see us when you've stopped detaining monks," approach?

Guess not. They wouldn't be getting paid for it.
