One of these days, mother nature or mankind is going to find a new and improved way to kill us off. What happens when some sort of virulent disease spreads throughout the populations that aren't checked regularly?
Try this scenario on for size... Some idiot, AQ, Shining Path, the Chechens or whomever, gets their hands on some of the Russian bio-weapon material. That stuff, these days, is guarded by a rusty padlock in the middle of nowhere...
Maybe they intend to release it on a specific group, but the Russians were famous for cutting corners. The stuff releases too soon around a school or a transit system and mutates. It is after all, a bio-weapon, and will adapt to the polling universe it's exposed to.
With global travel the way it is, and the fact that no one right now is looking for this stuff, it could spread like wildfire in a matter of hours. (Anyone remember the moron with TB on his honeymoon in Italy?) Anyone who was unfortunate enough to be on that plane has it now.
The crap spreads among the homeless and the under-insured. By the time the CDC realizes what is going on, the shit has mutated 6 or 7 times now. The disease dosen't care how rich or poor you are, or if you happen to be red or blue, young or old, it truly does not discriminate.
The chickenhawks fail to realize that this too, falls within the purview of national security. If everyone has a file medically speaking, the CDC would have a much easier time isolating the disease. This kind of crap scares me way worse than nukes ever did, and it will be too late to say "I was wrong" when your kids are dying from it...
