What I haven't heard yet is the obvious, that this cat was someone's pet. It didn't escape from a zoo, it didn't wander in from the wild, it didn't crawl out of the sewer after having been flushed down the toilet as a kitten... some asshole had to be keeping it as a pet and was careless enough to let it escape.
I wasn't there so I can't say for sure, but I have a really hard time believing that this cat was dangerous to anything but squirrels. I have no doubt that it could have been handled differently, even though a whole school full of America's children were laid out all in a row with their jugulars exposed for the cat to select from.
That's a pretty handy excuse though, I defy you to find one place in Chicago that ISN'T near an elementary school.
That good old tyme cry of "THINK OF THE CHILDREN!!!" couldn't fail.

Think of the parents. If they hadn't killed this cat, but monitored it and it attacked a kid, the press and parents would've created a circus.
If if wasn't near a school, they probably would've tried to bring in the tranqs. You DO hear of them doing just that all the time. I would imagine that many of those cops involved were just as unhappy to be shooting it as we are.
