I do not doubt the first strategy. If McCain wins, Hillary will begin campaigning unofficially soon after McCain takes office. She will be in our face relentlesly with the same condescention, pandering, and lies and exaggerations about herself. She plays well with gullible people.
Hillary can only hope for the second and that would have to happen before the convention.
