I bought an MPMAN somewhere around 1998-99. I haven't bought a new one yet. I've considered from time to time.
You see, I lost the pc hook up stuff a couple of years ago or so. I like the music I have on it though...so it's okay.
It has a radio. It came in handy during the 2004 Hurricane season. We were without power for three days after Hurricane Jeanne or Francis...who ever the heck that was...
The radio works great. The gadget works on one AA battery.

I could get a new one at some point...but like you...I haven't a clue.
This little guy has served me well and it's nothing fancy or outrageously expensive.
I bought it at a Canadian store on the internet that dealt in only MP3's and such.
I'd be curious to know what you decide to go with and how easy it is to use. Easy is good. Anything less than easy might end up bouncing off walls. Sturdy...sturdy is good too.
I could stick with mine for who knows how long...I have Mellancamp, 30 Odd Foot of Grunts, Jimmy Cliff and Ode to Joy on it...What more can you ask for?
Bottom line: you can be happy without expensive.
