California was the first state I've lived in that did not ask me for ID and I thought that it very strange that all I had to do was tell them my address. But in all fairness, if a state does mandate identification then the state should also enact a voter registration law that automatically registers everybody when they get a drivers license or other form of govt ID.

It would behoove the gov't that if they require an ID to vote that they provide an acceptable ID when a person registers to vote. Here in my part of NY, our signatures are compared, very old school. It's been so long but I am sure I showed ID at some point?
