To me, the choices in childhood are the ones settled before incarnating. So, really, past life exploration would be a valid tool in the process of understanding why someone would make such choices.
I recall on the old board I had a thread asking what others would choose to come back as in their next life. I believe only Cosmicrocker replied, saying he wanted to be a really hot chick who runs for president. Yet, the thread's point was to consider what lifestyle could you emerge into for whatever sets of experiences you're aiming to have. I'm hedging on fairy the next go round.

Past life might very well factor in, but my childhood reference was more about some warped incidents that might have occurred, that may have imprinted a young child in such a way.
What ever do you suppose would cause something like Munchausen Syndrome, and the likes? That takes some serious trauma, IMO.
As far as the next time around, I think that would have a lot to do with how we've lived this time around. I always figured I'd choose my next life, in order to correct the things that I screwed up this time.
Damn...I wonder what that would be.
