I read Rifkin's book in the late 90s (I think) and agreed with most of what he had to say. I recall him suggesting that a major shift would happen when the massive population of China got displaced by computers in the workplace. Has this started to happen yet? In my own employment history I have seen typesetters disappear, graphic design being outsourced to places like India, book manufacturers disappear (there are only a couple left in Canada ... if that), book publishers disappear ... in Canada we only have one bookstore chain left (since Indigo and Chapters merged) ... if we aren't careful there won't be any way to find out what someone like Rifkin is saying in the not so distant future. A new Dark Age ... but with computers, databases, etc. trying to keep things illuminated (sort of like the monks during the previous Dark Age).
