Obviously, there is an art to this panning. A steady hand is necessary, and when you get the hang of it, you'll be framing perfectly. Were you shooting out your window?
If outside, you can pan for a much longer time, and you get the shot exactly when you want it. When you get the panning down, you will actually shoot extremely slow shutter speeds...and you'll see nothing but blur in the background...it really, really gives the impression of speed. Try it...you won't see lines on the road, or anything but blur in the background. Again...it's easier when you have the room to start panning way before you take the shot. It helps you get the actual speed of the car down, and when you get the speed of the car perfect, you get little blur on the subject.
What was that shutter speed again? 1/13 of a second? That is extremely slow....
