I watched the first, only mildly amusing and a bit strained at times. The format was so different, in the first few weeks it changed every week. Plus, if I remember correctly, they were only on every other week at the start. I forget what they shared that time slot with on alternate weeks. It wasn't for a couple months before they 'found their voice' (to plagiarize HRC), so the third or fourth show was probably about the time people started to take notice.
Growing up in Chicago, in high school my buddy and I would go down to Old Town on Saturday nights, after the main show at Second City it was free to get in to see the improv from 11:00 to midnight.
I think it was the forth or firth SNL before Belushi made a face that flipped a switch in my memory and I remembered he was the same guy I saw at Second City doing an improv sketch about a guy with crabs visiting a female doctor... and deciding that the crabs weren't all that bad afterall and he'd prefer to keep them rather than disrobe for the ladydoc.
I'm still pissed about John Belushi's death. What a waste that was.
