We don't know what altitudes the phone calls were made from, but we do know that the flight made it up to about 38000 feet and 440 knots, altitudes and speeds from which cell phones do not work.

You apparently do not know an explosion when you see one. Maybe the only explosions you have been present for are firecracker explosions.
Brian being the USAF veteran should have seen one or two HE events in his training, though he certainly would not see one on a radar scope.
