Helms' negative impact culturally was just as destructive IMHO, he represented evrything that was wrong with the south and with his wing of the conservative movement. The Boston Globe had his obit on the front page calling him a "courtly yet polarizing figure." I really, really hate the fact that somebody literally has to be a mass murderer for the media or the general concensus to just break down and say "You know what? He was an asshole. He's surely on a spit in hell at this moment and we're all glad he's dead."
