Are people so stupid to not understand oil is a FINITE resource, that with increasing world demands, and static supplies, that the prices will continue to climb? And if you can't begin to think about this in your little greedy world, try to imagine the world of your kids and grand-kids with $10/gallon gasoline...or no fossil fuels.
Are people so stupid that they can't look at Lake Mead and Lake Powell and see how low the lakes are, to understand what this might possibly mean; no water and electricity to 35 million people?
Are people so stupid that when they see those huge chunks of ice breaking off land masses and falling into the oceans that they cannot possibly fathom ocean levels rising?
Are people so stupid they don't understand we screw like rabbits and the population growth is out of control?
Just look at every indicator and try to imagine how are we going to deal with these issues?
Why not be proactive on critical issues, do what we can afford to do in a time frame that suits us, and maintain focus on this project until we have eliminated most critical risks that are surely lurking around the corner?
The choice is to do nothing! Wait until our asses are on fire then blame everyone else then complain that your government is not solving your problems...and by the way don't raise my taxes!

While all this is true to be sure, the inescapable fact is we do have the gun to our heads. These measures needed to be done years ago to have side-tracked these examples before they reached the point they have. Time is now crucial, and the only way to change people enmasse is thru a concentrated government(s) action(s).
People who use their common sense and have done the research are way out-numbered by those who wait to be told. However, those waiting to be told are being told conflicting stories generated by those individuals and entitities who profit from things remaining as close to business-as-usual as possible. While careful considerations and scienctific examinations are taking place,
PR and $ are rushing the 'feel-good make-profit' POV as pseudo science and pre-muddying the waters.
Underfunded scientists and honest politicians can't make as much noise as well-funded 5th avenue
PR.
