Oh bullshit.

There's no manipulation whatsoever.

It's a standard deadpan headshot.

PHOTOGRAPHER: "Okay, now let's try strong, serious, firm, sir....great, excellent, very nice..."

Putin posed for these photos and, presumably, submitted to the direction of the photographer hired by TIME. He could have said he would use his own photogapher instead and thereby would have maintained control of the situation.

And the photo style --the elongated lens effect w/ backlit mono sike-- has been rag popular for a long time.
