Christmas and Solstice used to fall on the same day, Dec 25th. When we changed calendars solstice had to change, since it was obviously based on the movements of the sun and has nothing to do with any date...Christmas however did not. At one time I read a quote about why but I can't find it now.

12/25 is the birthday of many gods, Sun gods mostly.

I can't think of a single Christian tradition that isn't a copy of something practiced before by other religions in worship of other gods.
