I believe that Springfield already gave some good advice.
The only thing I would emphasis is that guns are extremely dangerous and getting training and practice may save your life. People who own guns but have never learned to fire them properly end up hurting themselves more often than the home invader they are trying to ward off.
If you plan to hunt, I also recommend taking a safety course, they are offered all over.
If your planning to buy a handgun, you don't need a handcannon. I would look at some of the smaller Smith & Wesson models, 9mm should be sufficient. Keeping in mind that learning to shoot a smaller handgun can be challenging cause the shorter barrel makes accuracy a bit more difficult. With sufficient practice you should become an ace in no time.
