No, this question definitely lies on the cusp where science and religion converge, in that it is the realm of speculation.
I think that there is matter beyond the limits of our ability to see with any instruments available to us at this time. I suspect this matter is attracting the matter we see accelerating away from us. We are in a region experiencing great expansion, while adjacent regions are probably experiencing contraction. This hypothesis defines the big bang as a localized event in a broader, perhaps infinite, universe.
