Until last summer I never even heard of this let alone entertain the idea.
Based on the stuff I read, the biggest argument is his lack of education and his upbringing. Shakespeare only went to a few years of grammar school.
Since a lot of the writings were political and veiled insults to the monarchy (an offense that was punishable by beheading) the real author had assumed the name William Shakespeare, who did not exist considering there was no confirmed date of birth for Shakespeare (well neither do my parents) and his grave is never to be dug up - as Bacon attempted to do but was stopped by authorities.
All in all, I don't think it really matter. He will always be known for writing Shakespeare.
