It almost seems like an on/off thing.
From here on out, the research should be easy. I'm pretty sure it goes through walls. Unlike most social science experiments, this can be done honestly.
You could do stuff like get a partner and just sit there trying different things.
Or get multiple people, don't introduce them to each other in any way, don't tell them anything about each other, simply put them in adjoining rooms, so they can't see each other, and then monitor their behavior changes based on who is in the adjoining room.
Checking for distance should also be easy enough... could probably get most of it with a single partner.
