I patiently explained to her how contrails were formed as aircraft exhaust cooled and the water vapor condensed into droplets or ice. If there are winds aloft, as they usually are, the contrails from aircraft following standard routes would create a series of parallel lines. If you were near the intersection of two such routes, it would create the grid patterns you see in your pictures.

She asked me how I knew all of this, and I told her it was from years of experience as a crew member in the Marine Corps. To this she responded "You're one of Them!!!"

I could only laugh...in a way, I guess she's right
