Likely he didn't know about Rezko's criminality when the donation was made and possibly didn't make the connection that Rezko had even contributed. But then again giving back money is a normal reaction for a candidate when the donor is being investigated, even if the investigation comes back with no charges filed.
Hillary should know, because she's been associated with more sleezey and slimy sorts than just about anyone else in this election-
even most of the republicans.
