That's a Score. Or at least that's what I think your trying to describe.

A Soundtrack would be music used for the film. American Graffiti being one of the first to actually do it exclusively and with no score. They told George Lucas he was nuts not to have a score.

Musical Score is the adaptation of music that is also being use as the main theme of the movie. Mostly musicals converted to film, like WestSide Story, or Grease. Also musical films like those of the Golden Age of Film. Examples being Top Hat and the plethora of films by or Busby Berkeley for example. Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers type films, where it was a movie but people would just singing. Wizard of OZ is an example we all know.

Basically if some one at some point sings a piece of a melody that's also used in the "background" , it's not a score, it's musical score.
