Chantytown, I have a date to see Cloverfield NEXT Saturday but I am dying to see this movie. Its my screensaver right now and I have been following the buzz since the trailer and ComicCon etc....cannot WAIT to see it, the reviews are good but bring your Dramamine they say! I am a huge fan of Abrams et al. SO envying you, I will look forward to your review, sans spoilers!

I like to think of this movie as "Smoke monster goes to New York".

My friend said it looks like another Godzilla movie (which technically he may be right on the Godzilla part) with no actors. First, I slapped him. Second I explained that JJ is all about the people, the characters and that is where the story lies. It will be the perspective of a group of people in an unbelievable situation. Rather then focusing on whatever the "monster" is it will focus on how this event is affecting these characters. JJ is cool like that, fuck the monster anyone can do that. Having a gripping story line with characters you can relate to is far more entertaining.

is partially right, in that JJ was inspired to make the film when he was visiting a toy store with his son and got to thinking that we had not had a really cool monster since Godzilla. There are a ton of spoilers out there right now in the reviews and on general websites as to what the monster is, but its an original monster. In general the movie is described as a monster movie meets YouTube in that its shot all hand held and all from the characters point of view, but you are also right in your response to your friend. Its definitely character first. I'm a big JJ fan and an even bigger Lost fan, and I can't wait to see the movie.
