Artists are overpaid? The artists who make gobs and gobs of money represent a miniscule fraction of the total number of artists. Furthermore, do you have any idea of the time and discipline it takes to make it in the music biz? And then there's production costs, promotion costs, endless rehearsals, touring...it's very hard work. When all is said and done, most musicians are making pennies per hour.

If one thing should be "free" and the pursuit of it free from any repercussions, shouldn't it all?
When you share these items, you are not giving the person an identical copy and keeping the original. Your analogies have a non bijective correlation to the initial query.

Oh good grief. My analogy was to get some of you to think. How many of you sell a physical product for a living vs. working in an office? How would you make that living if everyone told you "I don't want to pay!"

Would you like to show up to work tomorrow and the boss says "sorry, we paid you last week - just keep SHARING what you do."

Many bands have found ways to say FUCK YOU to this and they end up hurting their real and HONEST fans.

It really bugs me when people think intangible things should be free, if they want to continue in our current economy.

Because beer is consumable. If I buy a pint of beer and share half of it with my friend, then I only get to drink half a pint of beer, and my friend only gets half a pint of beer. If I want to drink a full pint and my friend wants to drink a full pint, one of us has to buy another beer.

Music is not consumable, so the rules are a bit different. If you lend your friend one of your CDs to listen to for a while, that's legal. But when you make a copy for your friend, that's not. In effect, you drank two pints of beer, but only paid for one.
