I'm sure you're aware that, although it certainly isn't new anymore, the album you reference is from his most recent path. He seemed to return to the industry on that album, and has since continued to sit in with current artists.

I would suggest that in these endeavors, he is the spice in the music, never meaning to be overbearing. These newer artists are the product, and Carlos is adding/blending his own flavor. It worked out very well for all involved.

You're the musician, not I...but sometimes for me, it isn't the technical ability: speed, intricacy, etc., rather the feeling that the music comes from somewhere deep within the musician.

There are a scant few who emit this kind of sound...Stevie was certainly one of those...Garcia was another. (why are they all dead?!!!)

One of my favorite Santana songs...great for drifting

I think Carlos and the many incarnations of the band Santana are sorely underrated.

I mean anyone who has this on their resume' and is still around no matter what the contribution large or small is astonishing.

I don't remember when I first saw the movie, this clip, or heard this song. It was over 30 years ago, probably an older sibling playing it. But it is a major jam no doubt. Musicians few and far between can duplicate this type of thing anymore. Everything seems all far too compartmentalized (in comparison) nowadays. These guys are tight and free all at the same time.

He isn't what he was and he never will be again. Maybe if he had died young like Hendrix he would have been immortalised in his best days. But of course that would have been a genuine tragedy just as it was for Jimi and anyone who dies so young. Lost my point a bit here, Carlos is great at what he does but what he does lately is something I can personally live without quite nicely. But im a guitar player, im looking at him possibly from a different perspective than some of you.
His licks do seem to get repetitive after a while. But I've listened to him enough to know that he has made some great stuff and can potentially be a diverse player. His 70's stuff was the best. He mixed a lot of different elements, from rock to blues to jazz to latin. Kind of went downhill from there from my perspective though. I'm not fond of his 80's, 90's or recent stuff really. He's both overrated and underrated depending on the context.

Pretty much what I should have said initially to get my main point accross.
