One of those "talky" movies along the lines of "Before Sunset/Sunrise", etc. 7.5/10 ACROSS THE UNIVERSE Netflix Summary: An American girl (Evan Rachel Wood) and a British lad (Jim Sturgess) fall in love amid the upheaval of the 1960s in this musical featuring classic Beatles songs and a mix of live action and innovative animation. On an excursion to America, Liverpool dock worker Jude (Sturgess) falls for Lucy (Wood). When Lucy's brother (Joe Anderson) is drafted, Jude and Lucy take a stand as anti-war activists. Dana Fuchs, Bono and Eddie Izzard co-star. -- I never saw this film, but it seemed like it was a "love it or hate it" from everything I'd read. I will be watching it soon. The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford Netflix Summary: After Robert Ford (Casey Affleck, in an Oscar-nominated role) joins the most notorious gang in the West, he grows tired of the charismatic Jesse James (Brad Pitt) and begins to resent his fame. But by hatching a scheme to gun down James, Ford risks forever being branded a coward. Sam Shepard, Sam Rockwell, Mary-Louise Parker and Michael Parks also star in director Andrew Dominik's riveting Wild West drama adapted from Ron Hansen's acclaimed novel. -- Heard good things ... never saw it. |

GONE BABY GONE - well worth a rental ... great 1st film by Ben Affleck
Netflix: When a 4-year-old girl goes missing in Dorchester, one of Boston's toughest hoods, private investigators Patrick Kenzie and Angela Gennaro (Casey Affleck and Michelle Monaghan) reluctantly agree to take the case. But the investigation proves tougher, riskier and more complex than they could have imagined. Ben Affleck's directorial debut, adapted from the Dennis Lehane novel, also stars Ed Harris, Morgan Freeman and Amy Ryan (in her first Oscar-nominated role). KING OF KONG: A FISTFUL OF QUARTERS - heard it was a really solid documentary Netflix Synopsis: When Steve Wiebe got laid off, he turned to the classic arcade game Donkey Kong for solace; soon, he decided to challenge Billy Mitchell's long-standing record score. So began the bitter rivalry that lies at the heart of this curiously compelling documentary. Providing a history of competitive video gaming and a look at some of the key players, The King of Kong is at its best when revealing just how far Mitchell will go to retain his crown. Out tomorrow, Feb 19th: MICHAEL CLAYTON Netflix: Screenwriter Tony Gilroy makes his directorial debut with this Oscar-nominated dramatic thriller about burned-out corporate lawyer Michael Clayton (George Clooney), who's built a career on cleaning up his clients' messes. When a guilt-ridden colleague (Tom Wilkinson) threatens the settlement of a multimillion-dollar case, Clayton faces his biggest challenge ever. Tilda Swinton, Sydney Pollack and Michael O'Keefe round out the impressive cast. AMERICAN GANGSTER Netflix: From director Ridley Scott comes this tense crime thriller starring Denzel Washington as true-life Harlem drug lord Frank Lucas. Russell Crowe co-stars as the dogged outcast NYPD cop charged with bringing Lucas down. Ruby Dee (in an Oscar-nominated role), Cuba Gooding Jr., Josh Brolin and Chiwetel Ejiofor lead the supporting cast in this powerhouse tale penned by Steven Zaillian (Schindler's List). Both the theatrical and unrated, extended versions are included. IN THE VALLEY OF ELAH - one of my faves of the year! Netflix: When exemplary soldier Mike Deerfield (Jonathan Tucker) goes missing after returning from Iraq, his concerned parents, Hank (Tommy Lee Jones, in an Oscar-nominated role) -- a career officer -- and Joan (Susan Sarandon), hire crack police Detective Emily Sanders (Charlize Theron) to investigate. Director Paul Haggis based the script on actual events reported in Mark Boal's Playboy magazine article. James Franco, Josh Brolin and Jason Patric co-star. |
