The axe is a Dyer Brothers harp guitar, circa 1927 or so. Gibson and Epiphone also made them as well. The guitars were huge and unwieldy, but were the only way mandolin orchestras could have a bass line...in the days before the electric bass. Hedges is one of my all time favorite guitarists...
