If you go to see "Iron Man"

be sure you stay until the end of the credits. I'm not saying exactly why, I'm just saying you must do it.

One of the reasons I liked this movie so much is that they way cut down on the cheesy one-liner bullshit.

Apparently? RDJ was pretty much the reason for that:

Q: Robert, is it true you threw the script against the wall a lot?
Downey Jr.: Sometimes the writers wrote stuff that was smart and cool and perfect, and other times I would go to them with ideas. By the time we got to act three I was like, I can't have this confrontation scene with Pepper: "But Pepper, can't you understand that I've changed? I've got to do right!" Unh-uh. We rewrote the scene, and I was scribbling it out on cue cards.

Gwyneth Paltrow: Robert would saunter in with his 88-liter coffee and his sunglasses, take the [pages], and literally ball them up and whip them against the wall and be like, "This is the worst scene I've ever read. We're not doing this." Robert cannot say something that he doesn't feel.

Q: How did the writers react to all that?
Downey Jr.: My thing is we should all feel free to ball each other's junk up and throw it against the wall because we're not here to serve a legal document, if you ask me. I don't care who you are or what you just won or what you just wrote. I don't think "genius" and "superhero script" belong in the same sentence. That said, those guys are awesome, and I really learned a lot.

It was a fanboy wet dream. My crowd is of the opinion that, as a launching pad for a franchise, Iron Man surpassed both Spidey 1 and X-Men 1 in quality.

What sinks any movie based on a comic is if it's made with the same dialogue and plot of a comic. The irony is most of the time if it pisses off the comic fans it tends to do better because the broader audience were able to overlook the fact it was a comic.

I haven't seen Iron Man yet, but I'm guessing they made a substantial departure from the original story.

They kept a surprising amount intact. But, yes, there were definitely some changes. Someone who was not part of the comic book continuity until years after Stark became Iron Man was included as being part of Stark's life since childhood, for example...

I REALLY did.

And I'm a gynormous X-men girl (However, I do don't even recognize the existance of the 3rd installment.)

The problem I had with Spidey was always the dialogue. But I was never a fan of the comic. After the billionth time they killed Aunt May or MJ, I declared it dead to me.

Iron Man almost completely avoided that snappy one-liner trap.

So, I guess they've been given a "go" for the Avengers as well... that should be interesting.

They were faithful on some very fundamental elements, but yeah... they made some changes.

But I've always felt that you have to compromise the story a bit or it doesn't adapt well to film.

Except for The Watchmen. I wish they were making that a miniseries instead of a movie.

I want to see every last panel of that comic on screen.

Not gonna happen, but a gal can dream...

Saw it Saturday and it was a blast ! Special effects were outstanding , and the dialogue wasn't the usual corny blather you used to expect in a super hero movie . I don't know why Gywneth Paltrow was cast though , aside from towering over RDJ (he must've been standing on something since he was taller than her in the movie) she just looked out of place like she was thinking what am I doing in a comic book movie ? Already the sequel release date is planned to be April 30, 2010 . Doubt if it will ever pass the Spiderman franchise though , since he is Marvel's most popular hero , while Ironman was never had the popularity of him or the Fantastic Four . I believe I'll pass on Hulk 2 . I actually liked the Bill Bixby tv series better than that first Hulk movie which lost all credibility when he kept growing and growing and his fucking pants still fit ! Pass on the upcoming Thor and Captain America too , I wish they'd make a Sub Mariner movie though , instead they're planning an Ant Man movie -WTF !

The movie I'm really looking forward to is Frank Miller's The Spirit . The trailer on movies.com has it looking like a Sin City clone and who knows if and when a sequel for that will be made . This may be the next best thing .
