Cantigny Show Day 1: No Children Fileted.... yet. There's always tomorrow. Beautiful weather and I sold more than I needed to, $8,000 in sales today. That will pay for this summer's show fees, truck rentals and part of my raw materials. But before I let it go to my head, I asked my wife, "When was the last time YOU made $8,000 in one day?" she replied, "Yes, but I don't work for six months before I have a payday." why does she always have to be right.... |

Day Two started with disaster. Just as we pulled into the parking lot the peak of the storm hit.
I haven't seen rain like that in decades... if ever. It came across the parking lot like waves from the sky. The trees in front of us had 10" trunks but were whipping around like blades of grass. The car was being rocked and battered by the wind. It was only about 100 feet to the visitor center where the breakfast/award ceremony had just begun but it would have been a death defying feat to try to make a dash for it. There was a distinct feeling of being "inside" something, like a monster's stomach, and at that moment the car was the only thing keeping us from being digested. The artist tents at the end of the row took the full force of the reported 70mph wind and were gutted. A total of 12 tents were destroyed. One ceramic artist lost a whole year's worth of his work. Behind our booth limbs the size of my waste (considerable) came down from the giant willows. Another huge tree came down over the park exit road. Most of the artist packed up and pulled out, I stayed to the end because of my big installation at the visitor center, I didn't want to pull it out before the end of the show as a favor to the show's producer, she's been very good to me so we stayed til the bitter end. fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck.
It was the right thing to do to stick it out with the producer. I feel really bad for the ceramics artist. Even with business insurance, this probably would have been considered an act of god and it still would be a total loss. |
