I've never liked the vids...they made it too easy for really bad music to have an appeal to an audience of couch potatoes.

What better description of the phenomena, than the words "video killed the radio star"?

As the years passed, the music got increasingly bad, as the video behind it got increasingly more intricate.

Then, they abandoned all quality, and just went for the sex appeal. I think this high tech world has contributed to the demise of the video...finally.

Kids multi task now...listening to music on Ipods, while text messaging friends, while flirting with middle aged perverts on myspace.

It seems to me that Stipe is saying the medium is dead. I'd agree to that to a large extent. And a lot of MTV era videos were pretty fatuous affairs. But that's also because the music represented in the videos was crap. Yes, tits ARE swell. And your ability to see lots of them (being such a hardcore rocker), is VERY impressive.

I like videos that either capture a musician's virtuosity, or provide meaningful context to the song.

Or have girls in miniskirts riding tigers.

I saw REM the night before the MSG date mentioned and they were great! Lots of chit chat, but I couldn't understand a lot of what he said. I do know that his Goddaughter was there, but if he mentioned the video thing, I didn't catch it. I'll keep an eye out for whatever they come up with.

Comcast provides a channel called "Concert on Demand" and they have been running an old REM concert from 1985 in Germany.....good stuff.

I'd agree with Stipe for established bands, but what about up & comers?

IE

Had this not caught my eye when it was on MuchMoreMusic a couple weeks ago, I wouldn't have turned up the volume. Now I've to see if they're consistently like this before getting a CD, I don't want to fuck up like I did with Carbon Leaf a few months ago.

I haven't watched the new R.E.M. video yet (< R.E.M. fanatic), it doesn't interest me.

Except for "Window in the Skies", I don't care about U2's videos either.

I'd like to see more Pearl Jam/Eddie Vedder videos -- partly because they don't seem to make many, and they wouldn't waste my time with dumb shit. (+ Vedder's "Hard Sun" was unusually good).

It could be that the video era may have contributed to the downturn of the industry: compare the cost of promoting radio airplay with that of videos which everyone had to make, and we're not talking about chump change.
