It does seem to me that the price for downloads on itunes is a little inflated for what you get, I believe Irrp had it right when he questioned the quality of downloads compared to CD. You also don't get the artwork and CD info which isn't that big of a deal to me, but the cost of production and manufacture of said item is significant, yet people that download pay about the same as someone who buys the CD. I think that the artists that create the music as well as those who helped produce it deserve to be compensated for their work, the problem with the music industry is the unnecessary middle management who had nothing to do with the production of the album, but they did call every week to ask 'you got a single yet'. These bottom feeders are destroying the music industry and have been for years, they may know how to make money off of easily entertained teenyboppers but they know fuck-all about music. If there is any hope for music it will be the internet that saves it, the more people download directly from the artists and small labels, the less need we will have for the soul-sucking jerks that run the industry as we know it.

Yea, I just looked a little bit ago, and dl'ed some jazz for reference at the higher bit count. It still dosen't sound as good to my ears. I'm sure I have a little bias, but I can get better guitar sounds on my little pos digital 8 track korg, and it isn't anything special. Itunes downloads are a rip-off fidelity wise...IMHO

99 cents a song is way too much for an mp3 or FLAC
