It'd definitely make for some interesting expense vouchers

Hmmm...does the guy selling loose joints, give receipts?

Times have changed, though...I remember trying to come up with ways to remember the setlists from Dead shows I was at. I would take the first letter from each song, and build a word as the show went on.

It kinda worked, but it would have been easier to bring a pad and pencil like the tapers/Dead nerds do.

Now, by the time you get home, someone posted the setlist on some site.

Amazing....and....almost any show you were at, is available through someone.

How did we ever get by in the good old days?

I stopped worrying about set-lists pretty early on. I remembered the good stuff, and there was an abundance of Dead Heads that took way too much stock in them. I thought there was a lot of people that ended up judging the shows by them.

I remember before the magic of the internet, someone had a telephone number that you could call and get the most recent set-list. The list was provided by the first person who called the line, after the show. Which of course had it's drawbacks...

I went over to Chungar's house one day, and he and his brother had called the line, and heard they were playing a song called 'Cheese and Artists'

Interesting title, eh? It turns out the actual song was Dylan's 'Visions of Johanna', and the person calling in the set, heard cheese and artists, rather than she's an artist...

Bobby, has it set up so 50? 100? recordings are made and sold on the spot. following a show, or you can order a copy (there or on the website) and they'll mail it to you.

Hell, I thought that just being able to get shows that I attended on tape was pretty f#cking cool!

I have to admit I was a taper nerd for at least a bunch of shows!
It was fun but in retrospect not nearly as much! I think the Dead kept profits at Maxell up for quite a few years.

Went and saw Phil in May and by the morning the download was available. Sure beats the old tape scene of yesteryear!

Yea! I remember 'Cheese and Artists' made me think of the Rutles Cheese and Onions!!!
I used to try and keep up on what the Dead were playing mainly before I was going to a show. They were always pulling out songs out of nowhere!

Yeah, the girls in the background that were talking though most of the show... "Jerry looks like my Grampa"!!! They ruined the whole tape!
But he had a good time

It was fun but in retrospect not nearly as much! I think the Dead kept profits at Maxell up for quite a few years.

Went and saw Phil in May and by the morning the download was available. Sure beats the old tape scene of yesteryear!

My first tape was from WNEW fm. I had attended my first show two two nights before. Apr. 25, 77. I remember, because my buddy died tragically, the night I made the tape off of the radio.

I wasn't much into the Dead at the time, but my buddy got last minute tix for the last row in the Capital Theater in NJ. I made my way up to a front row aisle seat, and sat there all night with my camera. I was hooked!

Two nights later I taped that night's show off of the radio, and had it for a long time.

Many years later, I'm in the mountains, and David Ganz is doing The Deadhead Hour on syndicated radio. I'm getting more static than music, trying to pull a signal out of NYC. I've got volumes of great stuff, all with crap sound.

At the time, it was the greatest thing since sliced bread. Now, we get soundboard stuff, without much effort!

You're gonna love this....Jolene, Jolene....

Late 80's, I have tix for opening, and closing night at MSG. I have a major fiasco w/my van, and it gets towed during the show. We stay in the city, and drive home the next day.

That night, the Dead are doing a Rainforest Benefit. WNEW is broadcasting the show. I'm taping, and we're in my living room talking about the night before, and getting pretty buzzed.

The first set ends w/Don't Ease Me In. A senior dj at WNEW got the job of doing the broadcast. He breaks in as the band takes a break, and says..." A great first set, finishing with Jolene, Jolene."

We were pretty buzzed, but I turned to my buddy, and asked if he heard what I had just heard? I regret that I jumped up to cut the talking out of my audio tape. I would have loved to get that for posterity!

I suppose if you don't know any Dead, the chorus "Don't Ease, Don't Ease" could sound like Jolene, Jolene!

Needless to say, we never heard from the senior dork anymore that night...they had a kid finish up the broadcast.

Gotta go....back later

next up..."This must be your first show"
