Hardly world changing, but this is one of my favorite songs that has been covered rather well by the Band, and also the Dead.

Couldn't find a good Dead vid., and this isn't the best Band version, but it feeds the jones.

And of course...

This one sure changed my world.....

Return of the Grievous Angel by Gram Parsons ... I found a good live version with Ryan Adams and Emmylou Harris but they wouldn't let anyone embed it.

Freekin Dylan

You know...even if you think you know the song, you have to listen to all the live cuts.

You never know what the hell the lyrics will be!

He had a job in Santa Fe

Workin in an old hotel

But he never did like it all that much

And one day it went to hell

LOL. I still can't play and sing TUIB without chords/lyrics of the 5 different versions (that I'm familiar with) slipping in to the same song. Did you ever hear the 'grand ballad' version from the '78 tour? I think about 90 percent of the lines are completely re-written.

"She lit a burner on the stove, wearin' a dress made up of stars and stripes
"I thought you'd never say hello," she said
"You know you look like you could be the silent type."
Then she opened up the Bible
And she started quotin' it to me
Jeremiah chapter seventeen
From verses 21 and 33......"

That's probably how Dylan has stayed sane. Imagine how boring it would be if you felt obliged to make them all exactly the same as the studio versions. Not to mention that he practically has a different band on everything he's ever done ... when he was touring with The Band in 1974 he was doing many songs that The Band had never played on except in concert. Sometimes it works brilliantly and other times the critics get down on him. But Dylan has way more integrity than a lot of his so called peers display at times.

My second favorite Dylan line:

"There was music in the cafes at night
and revolution in the air."

.......you had to be there.

Whereas writing is a catharsis, I'm sure he's got 7 or 8 versions of virtually every song. He probably tweaks them here and there to make them perfect for release, and summons up these alternate versions depending on his mood at each show.

Keeps the real aficionados on the edge of their seats!
