We may never witness another phenomenon like Dylan.
Everyone was covering his songs. Granted, the times begged for someone to speak up. I always liked Talkin NY ... I walked down there and ended up In one of them coffee-houses on the block. Got on the stage to sing and play, Man there said, "Come back some other day, You sound like a hillbilly; We want folk singers here." Well, I got a harmonica job, begun to play, Blowin' my lungs out for a dollar a day. I blowed inside out and upside down. The man there said he loved m' sound, He was ravin' about how he loved m' sound; Dollar a day's worth. BTW...that Cadilac commercial creeped me out... Think he needs the money??? |

Jeff Tweedy was on the panel, this is what he said:
"It's not ambiguous like his high romantic, surreal stuff, and not his angry side. It's Dylan at his most playful and content. But there's still this fractured nature to the story." |

How about the Vicoria's Secret ad? Needs the money? Nope. I think he's at an age where he's saying, "If they're going to give it to me I'm going to take it." He's not known for throwing his money around...I'll bet he's actually thinking of what is going to be left for those he cares for when he leaves this earth. He's got 16 years on you my friend...take it from me, when you get up around our (Dylan's and my) age you start to think of things like that.

I'm sure you're right...some artists are more concerned about image. Joni Mitchell refused to put out any greatest hits albums, to keep from tarnishing her library. Finally, she caved in the last 10 years. I never got the impression Dylan gave a flying f what anyone thought of his image, so I guess if they're tossing money at him, he's gonna grab it. I'm thinking the bank account just from his royalties is impressive. I was wondering what's up with The Wallflowers lately. Jacob is talented both as a writer, and a musician. He seems to have disappeared just as quickly as he appeared. I know he's touring, but I haven't heard anything new on the radio Although....radio sucks up here in the mts. |

Robert Zimmerman doesn't have a thing on Woody Guthrie. Hell, Ramblin' Jack Elliott would whip his ass.
Robert Zimmerman = Redundancy in Music; same song, over and over with different lyrics and vocals that can hardly be understood. I do appreciate a lot of his music but a genius he was/is not. |

the times we're living in have me digging into a lot of old music i grew up with in the vietnam and post vietnam era. i normally don't go backwards and listen to older music in my collection as i'm always so hungry for new stuff. but then again - in my opinion, there isn't much in terms of outstanding new music these days. and since i have this feeling of deja vu, i started digging - pete seger's "big muddy", the white album, with "revolultion", etc. naturally, "war".
but i can't get enough of a little nugget i'd forgotten about from the era these days... "broken english" dig it out and give a listen. it gives me WAY more chills NOW than it did back then. life is all about cycles - and this really drives that point home! |

Clearly, nobody has had a bigger effect on Dylan, than Woody. Music is a gift, passed on from generation, to generation. Woody touched Dylan, and Dylan touched EVERYBODY else. Ever thought that Dylan helped further Woody's cause? Figuratively, of course. Just as the music thread opens our eyes to other's taste in music, Dylan opened many eyes to Woody, and a slew of others. |
