At last he had a Conservative guest that didn't speak in TalkinPoints.
Darryl Issa? I don't remember his name and info on the HBO site is over two weeks old. Not that I agreed with him, but at least he argued with Conservative points of view instead of Conservative bullshit. (see Tony Snow) The NOW lady was a bit too chatty. At one point she was pulling a Snow, just kept talking on and on, by the time she was finished I think she had bridged three different issues. When ever someone mentioned the name "Obama" you'd hear her off camera saying "and Hillary." I didn't go to Overtime, for some reason that site and HBO in general has lost a lot of my respect. If it wasn't for Real Time I seriously believe we'd go back to renting movies. It's not as if HBO has anything else going on right now. No Sopranos. No Carnival No Six Feet Under No Sex and The City No Lucky Louis Not anything I'd invest my time in. It's tempting to save the $$$ and do what my son does in Alaska, just wait until these shows come out on DVD. |

I am doing better with SHowtime and Starz. It was fun seeing Richard Belzer last week on Real Time, and I am crazy about Matt Taibbi, but I am about ready to drop HBO at least until "Curb Your Enthusiasm" comes back on. Of course HBO's "fuck the subscriber" mission statement has influenced this decision. (Need I mention again that the HBO Floyd R. Turbo Sheltered Workshop Real Time message board is dominated by someone who boasts that he tried to watch "Real Time" once and needed a "sic [sic] sac [sic]"? |

Curb Your Enthusiasm is good, but again, you can get it on DVD for a lot less than a months subscription to HBO. Now I'm going to have to look at the numbers to see just how much could be saved. Is Real Time watchable on line somewhere? |

That is exactly what my son told me about The Wire. He rented the first seasons on DVD up north and he raves about it. I wonder if there's time to rent and view the first seasons before the final season starts.

The final season has already started so you'd have to rent the last 4 seasons and then catch the ones you've missed this season, on On Demand. The thing about The Wire is you really need to start at the beginning. My husband and I didn't start watching it until last March. We rented the all the DVDs and did a Wire marathon until we were caught up.

HBO's first run movies have been shit for years. It's always rested on it's original programming. Once Oz reached crossover audiences, they knew they had something special. The Sopranos outright changed television as we know it, and probably brought us reality TV. Reality TV was network TV throwing in the fucking towel. They gave up. With FCC rules, they couldn't compete with shows like the Sopranos and Six Feet Under, even if they hired the right producers and talent.
Real Time is a great show, too. But it needs it's format ,and New Rules is HUGE. An hour of nothing but debate? For political freaks like us, maybe. But he could kiss half of his audience goodbye if he did that. he knows he needs his new rules segment. He got a book deal for them alone, afterall. Remember, Bill Maher is a comedian, first. |
