Thumbs down The Difference Between Asprin & Vioxx: Real Time 02/08/08 Commentary.

Now myself also coming from the instinctual paranoia of drugs with a nine page warning label in the magazine ad, I think Maher has in fact slipped the rails of Rational-Trans Lines.

Now in medieval Europe it wouldn't have matter how tough your immune system if you live in those conditions you're going to catch something. Your immune system can handle viruses or some bactera, but throw a pathegenic protist [single cell organisms with a nucleus] into your body and it's like ICBM's throw Jr.'s Scarecrow Defense Initiative. It'll get through no matter what.

There are also many pathogentic bacteria and viruses that can befuddle the immune system, but that's not the point of this thread.

Some drugs are necessary. I haven't swallowed a pill in this decade stronger than a vitamin [and that was over three years ago]. I didn't even take the pain medication my denist prescriped for me after a root canal. But I know at some point I may well need soem sort of drug or other orally introduced medication in order to treat a condition, maybe even to survive.

There's a lot of people on here who right now take prescription drugs because THEY HAVE TO! They don't like it, but they do it because it's their ass! That's how it is for them whether they like it or not.

Everyone on here [who doesn't have me on ignore ] has read my bitching about Big Pharma, a member of the Axis of K-Street. That's because they dream up shit like "Restless Leg Syndrom" about the same time they defecate out- not a cure for it, but the treatment so that you won't know you have it. You're driving, eating and gambling in your sleep, but at least your legs know to shut the fuck up when you sit your ass down.

But drugs are also why we're not catching polio. It's why the flu doesn't kill 20,000,000 people [yeah, count them zeros] like it did after World War One.

In the 18th century doctors wanted to protect people from one of various poxes by smearing a string onto an open sore of that same or similar pox then tie it to a needle and run the whole thing through the patient's skin. And of course they were accused of plotting to murder people with their knowledge in order to do... whatever with the bodies.

I think this anti-medical crowd from PETA [let's not kid ourselves here] want to rail against everything that cures or treats. As opposed to animal testing and in favor of limiting the power of drug companies or what they can market, we can't throw the baby out with the bath water [another of those expressions from disease ridden medievalism].

And antibiotics aren't always bad. If used correctly and in moderation it does in fact save millions of lives every year. We shouldn't dump it into our livestock by the shovel full and we also don't need the cows hopped up on the same shit Barry Bonds shoots into his arm. But guess what. Most hormones don't remain chemically intact after passing through the digestive tract. It might degrade into something that is adverse to your health to some degree or another, but it's not like it'll incorporate into your DNA and turn you into some Marvel Comics mutant supervillian.

We need moderation when advocating for drugs, medical procedures or hormones use in people or our food. But exercising a little sense when condemning their use is also called for.

here's MHO (as if you were waiting)

1. steriods in sports are NOT the steroids in the food chain.

2. antibiotics are ABUSED!!!!!!!!!!!
RARELY ARE THEY NEEDED - FOOLS!

3. Bill Maher was WAY off target on the immune system.
why he doesn't get sick is good food good rest and he probably doesn't put dirty hands in his mouth.
Why do I type that?
BECAUSE IT IS THE BEST WAY TO NOT GET SICK!

4. people are not all sick.
People are unhealthy.
BIG difference!!!

5. the whole attitude toward health care is infantile!!!!

Y'all want to do WHATEVER and get a cheap pill to fix it.

THIS IS AN ASSININE APROACH TO HEALTH CARE!!!!

You are flipping lucky to live
THREE TIMES AS LONG AS YOUR ANCESTORS.
Most women in ALL OF HISTORY DIED IN CHILDBIRTH!

People DID NOT have better immune systems in the past.
THEY DIED YOUNG!!!!!
duh.

you wnat cheap health care and to slop around all day every day.

OK< have cheap doctors and cheap - low quality meds.
have cheap shoddy surgery.
I'll be HAPPY to do it for you.
Pay ME!

I have a different thought on steroids in athletes. I say that it should be banned or allowed BOTH on the same condition, that they admit it's an industry not a sport. Then I'll back whatever decision they reach, because it's okay to regulate chemicals in any industry if they're shown to be harmful [which synthetic steroids are when they're used excessively an without medical justification].

If, God forbid, Bill should come down with something life threatening (his father died of cancer), he'll be taking those drugs and radiation treatments like there's no tomorrow, because the alternative is death.

I wish he wouldn't act so high and mighty about this issue, because it's really bad karma he's generating. I think it's really arrogant of BM to think he can escape it all...but I hope he does retain his health.

I remember before I got sick, I hadn't been feeling too well for several months. Nothing to put my finger on, nothing to take a pill for, just icky. Then one morning I awoke to find I couldn't make it down the stairs. It was downhill from thereon, with no turning back. We just never know what will happen to us.

I thought he came across kinda Tom Cruise like here. I was hoping he would get more out and bring it down to the fact that Americans are over medicating themselves and that many of these drugs are just abused and that we don't need as much as were taking. (collectively)

But it came out like he was just against medicine. That did seem a bit bizarre.

I think the panel was turned off by his attitude about the whole thing. Bill can be so insufferable sometimes.

Well, they did... It was just not as good as antibiotics. But we are currently experiencing an upshot in asthma and other immune disorder related deceases thanks to going too clean... Our immune system does need target practice one in a while. That said, like Heretic mentioned, there are bugs out there that'll take you out no matter how good you are... That's when you really need drugs, and lots of them, taking them religiously because otherwise you are using yourself as a biological weapons factory, breeding superbugs.

I never understood why people are so enraged about using steroids... Increased performance pleases crowds and generates revenue, so athletes are doing it for the masses so to speak. If there will be drugs in the future that won't harm harm the athletes, i think those should not be banned.

They didn't fabricate that. Generations of my family have had this long before it became a public item for discussion. I had it as a child, but for some reason my siblings and parents continued with it and I didn't.

Meds are a necessary evil for some of us. High BP also runs rampant in my family. One BP med won't take care of it. Color me a pill popper.
