If they ever made any sense I would give credit where credit is due. Kristol, Rove and Rush have never made any sense. Why would being a Clinton voter make me swing to right wing 'pundits?' You know to people who do their own thinking right is right no matter who is involved. In fact Morning Joe has been sliding liberal since he killed his girlfriend and had to resign from congress.
I ask you, did anyone ever leave that cushy job because they wanted to spend more time with their family or on MSNBC? I think not.

Well now if you want to get all literal about what was said then let's do so.

This was Obama's answer to Russert's question during the debate:

"Now, I always reserve the right for the president -- as commander in chief, I will always reserve the right to make sure that we are looking out for American interests. And if al Qaeda is forming a base in Iraq, then we will have to act in a way that secures the American homeland and our interests abroad. So that is true, I think, not just in Iraq, but that's true in other places. That's part of my argument with respect to Pakistan. I think we should always cooperate with our allies and sovereign nations in making sure that we are rooting out terrorist organizations. But if they are planning attacks on Americans like what happened on 9/11, it is my job, it will be my job as president to make sure that we are hunting them down."

McCain's comment on Obama's answer:

"I'm not embarrassed to tell you that I did not watch the Democrat debate last night," McCain said, "but I am told that Senator Obama made the statement that if Al Qaeda came back to Iraq after he withdraws -- after the American troops are withdrawn -- then he would send military troops back, if Al Qaeda established a military base in Iraq. I have some news: Al Qaeda is in Iraq. Al Qaeda, it's called Al Qaeda in Iraq, and my friends if we left they wouldn't be establishing a base, they wouldn't be establishing a base, they'd be taking a country. And I'm not going to allow that to happen my friends. I will not surrender. I will not surrender to Al Qaeda."

McCain falsely states what Obama said. Obama said "if al Qaeda is forming a base in Iraq", not whether or not they existed there. They will exist in some form or another in Iraq and numerous other countries for years to come, what is important is their ability to base operations in Iraq and those other countries. Al Qaeda was not basing operations there before the war but since then has been adding to the violence between Sunni and Shia factions.

McCain's claim that they would be "taking a country" is complete nonsense. The Shiite majority would slaughter the relatively tiny Al Qaeda presence there long before that even came close to happening. The big worry would be the escalation of civil war between the Shia and Sunnis, not Al Qaeda. So McCain is positing a false and ridiculous scenario. More crap from the same group that brought us the WMD scare tactics.

Obama's response to McCain was this:

“I've got some news for John McCain, that there was no such thing Al Qaeda in Iraq until George Bush and John McCain decided to invade."

Obama was referring to "Al Qaeda in Iraq" which is the operational base of Al Qaeda in Iraq which did not exist before the war. It has nothing to do with the remote Kurdish aligned Al Qaeda members that were there before that had no significant influence on the Sunni's or Shia who control Iraq and which was never called or referred to as "Al Qaeda in Iraq".

Obama's statement was correct. The one making up bs was McCain.
