Lewis Black, although jewish, does not portray "jewish humor". He mentions his religion on occasion, when discussing the bible, or religion in general during his act. Typically dry, and often "obsessive", jewish humor is a flavor/type...just as racial, political, etc... Borscht belt comedians come to mind...Hackett, Berle, Brooks, etc. Although not in the Borscht Belt circuit, Larry David is the epitome of jewish humor. Some people "get" it, and some don't

I do like the new Leno-esque man on the street segments. This particular show had potential, but Shandling pulled a Robin Williams, and monopolized the entire segment. There were a few times this season, when Bill pushed some of his strongly felt beliefs, (kids being kids) when he was so wrong, it wasn't funny. Israel is another topic, where he's stubbornly "my way only". I still get a lot of laughs, and I'm certainly going to keep watching. I agree that this season could have been much better.

Warning, personal bitching ahead.
So I finally watched the full bit of Overtime for my question. I ran off to gloat so I didn't see what happened. And I am very disapointed since I think the question was selected with Donahue in mind so he could get some face time, but I think that cockfucker Garry Shandling scared off Phil Donahue with his filibustering bullshit of banality. Kudos for Arianna Huffington for trying to discuss it after Maher and resident douchebag Matt Taibbi brushed it off. If Donahue was still there, Maher wouldn't have dared done that. After re-watching to show, my expectations for Maher have dropped like a rock since I thought they reached rock bottom last week. Never underestimate Garry Shandling for being able to turn what could have been the best show of the season into one of the worse. If I ever see him on the street, I'm going to punch him. |
