The Clintons, The Trenches, The Abyss, and you

He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster. And if you gaze for long into an abyss, the abyss gazes also into you.-Fredrich Nietzsche
The 1950's. Chuck Berry, Drive-ins, Dwight Eisenhower, Howdy Doody, and the start of the 2008 Democratic presidential campaign....
No strike that. No one will pay attention to this if you're going to behave like that. But it's been a very long campaign, eh?
In the early 90's, after more than a decade of thuggish, amoral, feral, power grabbing, the neo-con movement looked like an undefeatable juggernaut. Ronnie, George I, Newt, and Co. were dragging us all, by our tightened belts, in a forced march to the River Styx.
They wielded power in a whole new way, and they were as enamored of it, as a teenage boy with his first car. As long as they could shake the gas money out of the populace, they'd cruise aimlessly, windows rolled down, whistling and hooting at the Alaskan wilderness, glowering and exchanging threats with their arch-rivals, the kids from the Soviet Union.....
All right, that's not helping. I really do have a point. A salient point. Really, it's a good point.
Anyway, they had a stranglehold on the electorate. Everyone the Dems threw out there, got chewed up and spit back. Mondale, Dukakis, et al...Black holes of anti-charisma, stilted and charmless, useless in the street-fight the electoral process had become.
The word 'liberal' was used so many times, in such sneering fashion, that it became an epithet. We had nobody to stand up to this pack of cut-throats.
Until Bill Clinton.

I got some bad news for you. Bill Clinton didn't always stand up to the extreme right wing, instead often taking their side. NAFTA, welfare "reform" and the taking of potshots at Iraq all served the agenda of the anti-American right wing.

It's a long entry, I'm bound to be wrong about more, before I'm done. ![]() |
