"The Amazing Race" Trumps Bible As Learning Tool

Posted 01-13-2008 at 10:01 PM by itsmeeeeeee
Yeah, I said it.

...and I meant it, too.

I'm thoroughly convinced that you can learn a lot more about God watching "The Amazing Race" than you can reading the Bible. And I say that completely confident that I'm NOT going to hell for saying it!

It's not that the Bible isn't a good book, just that it's confusing, and therefore, open to complete misinterpretation, etc...

...while "The Amazing Race" is not.

My mom practically FORCED me to start watching this reality show a couple of years ago. You have NO idea what a big deal it was for me to start watching one of these damned things. Let alone, how long (a couple of years), or how much she had to bait me to get me to finally watch an episode. You see, I hadn't watched a network program in years, (other than my weekly racin' fix.) But the second I watched my first episode, I knew I was hooked on the spiritual aspect of this reality show.

Yes, I was a TV snob. Nothing but CNN, documentaries and movies for me! And ONLY movies on premium channels - because I have a rule - which is... Movies cannot be interrupted with commercials. No commercials. I can't stomach the damned things! And reality shows were even LOWER on the food chain than commercials, in my opinion. To me, reality shows are just symptomatic of how low we've fallen as a society, indicative of man's voyeuristic fascination with feeling superior to their common man. But that's another subject.

And i know... I'm in advertising, and therefore, I suppose it's hypocritical of me to be so "anti-commercial".

But the fact that I sell advertising is precisely WHY I'm anti-commercial. I KNOW way too much about advertising to condone it. I know how it's mostly used when it comes to TV. I'm full aware of how MUCH the industry contributes to the rampant materialistic ills our society is suffering. But that, too, is another subject.

What I'm talking about here is God verses "religion".

And this week's episode of the race was proof, if there was ever any doubt, that if someone wants a crash course in how God works, if they REALLY want see God in action... they can do it one of two ways. Spend every Sunday morning in church being spoon fed a book that they will rarely read themself, let alone ever fully understand...

or they can spend Sunday night watching "The Amazing Race" and learn more in an hour than someone would probably learn in a life time of reading the bible and going to church.

This race - this "instant karma of a reality show" - cuts right to the chase, spiritually speaking. If you don't "get it" when you watch this show, you never will. I don't care HOW much you study the Bible.

And if ever there was a season of the race that succinctly spelled out all the spiritual "do's and dont's" of life out, it's this season.

The amazing race is a reality show, but it's much much MORE than just a bunch of people chasing a million dollars. It's a race of man against his own inner demons. It rewards those who are up to the spiritual task, and it punishes those who can't see the forest for the trees. But on the bright side, even if the participants don't learn anything WHILE they're racing, we do! And they always have the tape to go back and review - as a painful reminder, or profound revelation. The inherent epiphany is completely up to them.

But perhaps the real beauty of this spiritual tool is, you don't have to milk a camel yourself to clearly see each lesson being taught.

I just hate that this season is almost over...
so much so, that I already can't wait for next year's race to begin. I guess that's usually the sign of a REALLY good show.

i love this show, and i agree with everything you just said...i normally laugh at "reality tv" and can't for the life of me figure out why people watch it, but there *is* something completely different about "the amazing race"...while we don't watch tv hardly at all, this is the one show i will make a point to catch and, too, find myself searching the internets for when the next season begins...

i was happy with the couple who won, i liked them all for different reasons - and they all seemed to feel like winners despite the results.

this was a TERRIFIC season - with a LOT of very valuable life lessons!
