I wouldn't doubt that authorities took advantage of it for their own "benefit". But saying that (which I've heard) Manson was a patsy and that the rest of his group was to blame for those murders...do you really believe that?

No. What I do believe is that an obscure cult was elevated and kept in the public conscience for years. They were equated with the hippy-movement. Which had a dampening effect on the anti-war movement at the time.

They took a turd and made it blossom into something that suited their objectives.
