Apparantly, according to duvidoo, the fireman is very suspicious of the cut beam, but his friend was too busy on the cell phone to pay any attention.
He can tell all this just by looking at the picture. Seriously.
But why stop there?
Let's add more.

The guy on the phone, Jed, is talking to his sister Lucy. She's 3 months pregnant but is only now letting the family know. Afterall, she's not married... not even in a relationship. She's worried that Jed will think less of her.

The other fireman, Frank, thinks that the angle cut on the beam seems strange. He tries telling Jed, but Jed's too busy screaming "what are you, a whore?" into the phone. He makes a mental note to bring up the cut beam later, but then starts thinking of the new cheese & pepperonni stuff crust pizza at pizza hut.
When the phone call ends, he says "hey Jed, lets get lunch".
Jed agrees.
The angle beam was never brought up again.

I can tell all this by looking at the picture.

So what is the path of least resistance? Into the building itself? I should think that it would be the path of MOST resistance, seeing that the damaged portion of the buildings met with the undamaged portions, which became damaged when they met.

Right....you THINK that's the path of most resistance. But just because you THINK something doesnt make it so. All of these things can be easily proven with mathematics....I'm afraid THINKING doesnt cut it sunny.
